Hungary is a small but superb country where you can experience a whole new culture but also taste a wonderful cuisine. Hungarian cuisine might seem a little bit too hot and very varied for the general population but it’s definitely an experience worth trying.
Goulash is the traditional dish of Hungary and it’s practically a stew with meat, vegetables and noodles. It has all kinds of spices and herbs, but the most important ingredient is paprika, which makes it really hot. You can buy this dish from any restaurant in Hungary but make sure that you ask the waiter what types of spices are put in it if you know of any allergies you might have.
Langos – This is one of the best street foods you can find in Hungary and it’s practically a doughnut but it’s not sweet and it’s usually served with cheese, cabbage, eggs or mashed potatoes. It’s one of the foods you can buy practically anywhere and it’s a great snack if you are feeling a bit hungry.
Kürtőskalács is one of the most amazing pastries that you can find in Hungary. It’s a cylindrical shaped dough that is baked on an open fire and it has almonds, walnuts and sugar on top. They are usually served in public places when different events are held, but you can find them in pastry shops and bakeries.
Tarhonya is a type of pasta that is prepared with eggs and is served with all types of vegetables and meat. If you like any type of pasta you will love tarhoya and you can also order it from any restaurant or even fast foods.
Halva is another special food that comes from Eastern Europe and Asia, so it’s also traditional in Hungary. Halva is made from nut butter, grain flour, nuts or beans. Some of them are also made from carrots, pumpkin and sunflower seeds.
These are just a few of the foods you can taste in Hungary, but don’t hesitate to try other foods that are offered to you. Also, make sure that you don’t buy food from places that seem unsanitary, although many of the street foods can be fully experienced when bought from small business vendors.
